There are many people out there who have replaced their shelf with natural products to clean their hair and believe or not, they have not touched a single shampoo bottle in months! It might sound a bit gross to you now as the picture that naturally pops into anyone’s mind is the oily, greasy and frizzy hair after a no-shampoo wash, but in reality, it is a non-toxic, frugal and easier way of cleaning your hair.
Washing your hair with shampoo is equivalent to washing it with detergents That’s right, shampoo is a detergent too. The good-old shampoos we rely on contain many harmful chemicals that take away our hair’s natural oils. The oil secretion on our scalps is simply a protective mechanism to keep our hair strong and soft. The more shampoo we use, the more oil will be produced from our scalp.
It is simple really, our body works in a way to stimulate a ‘negative feedback mechanism’ to bring the various environments in our body back to normal. If we drink too much water, we lose it through sweat, respiration and urine. Similarly, when you get rid of the oils in your hair with strong chemicals held in shampoo, the oils are temporarily removed, but the body feels the urge to produce more oils and that is what you get the next day when you wake up in the morning. Try imagining washing your hair with washing powder; that is exactly what you are doing with shampoo.
Shampoos contain mineral oil that densely coats your hair, making it look soft and shiny. This acts as a barrier and prevents oil from being released from your scalp. Therefore, you end up needing more shampoo to remove the grease. This is exactly why you feel the urge to wash your hair with shampoo every day. Many hair products containing silicone, these ingredients often end with –cone, -xane or –conol and are one of the main reasons why your hair gets damaged and frizzy.
Going ‘poo-free’ is cheap, easy and healthy for your hair. Perhaps the best product you can get from the market to wash your hair is baking soda. It does not contain any harmful chemical, it is the weakest alkali and it is extremely gentle giving your hair the right amount of tender, loving, care.
The recipe can be adjusted according to your hair type and need of course and you can play with it to add your own spice and flavor. The standard recipe is to add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to one cup of water. You can put this in a squeeze bottle and give it a good shake and your natural shampoo is ready.
For a natural conditioner, you can use apple cider vinegar. It is great to balance your hair’s pH and counteract with the alkaline nature of baking soda. It makes your hair soft, shiny and untangles it, preventing frizz and knots. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to one cup of water. You can add herbs and essential oils to this mixture as well, to add a bonus effect. To enhance the smell, you can add a stick of cinnamon to the bottle and a dash of vanilla to make your hair smell fresh and spirited. For those with dry hair, you can add your own tricks up your sleeve like Aloe Vera which does wonders to your hair and skin!
