How to Wash Synthetic Wigs

synthetic wigsA synthetic wig does not require frequent washing. The general recommendation is to wash the wig after 12-15 wears. It is better to avoid the excessive use of styling products because they increase the wig’s exposure to dust and dirt.

Here are the steps:

Purchase a shampoo especially designed for washing synthetic wigs because regular shampoos are too strong and might fray the wig’s fibers and cause discoloration. Before washing, brush gently the wig with a wire brush or just use your fingers to untangle the fibers if you have a curly wig.

Fill in a large bowl with cold water (never, never use hot water), add shampoo and a teaspoon of baking soda, if the wig caught strong odors (smoke, cigarette) and stir in. Place the wig into the bowl and keep it immersed for one minute. Rub very gently the wig cap to clean it and let the wig to soak for 5-10 minutes.

Rinse with fresh and cool water until all the wig shampoo is gone and squeeze lightly to remove the excess water. Do not twist to prevent fibers breakage. Spread the strands of the wig on a towel for air drying. It never hurts to use a wig stand for this purpose. From time to time you can apply a wig conditioner after washing to revitalize the fibers.

Wait until the wig dries completely to start brushing and styling it. If you brush the wig while is still wet you can deal with serious damages, which will certainly shorten the wig’s life.
