How to Take Care of Hair Extensions

hair extensionsI love hair extensions but they are not always the easiest things to take care of. Especially when you get really long ones installed. But since you’ve got them in and want to keep them for as long as possible, it’s useful to know how to take care of them on your own without always having to go to a hair dresser and most importantly so that you don’t damage your own hair underneath. Unlike your real hair, synthetic hair require a bit more tender, loving, care to make them look perfect beyond their ‘expiration date’.

Before you buy…

Make sure the quality of the hair extensions you buy it top notch according to your requirements. Note that cheap synthetic hair extensions will not last long and will probably melt and shrivel to heat. If you are into styling your hair frequently through ironing, blow drying and heat curling, make sure your hair extensions can take the heat. It is most likely that cheap hair extensions will be made of fibers that will not withstand the heat and get damaged or melt instantly. Good news is, that if you agree on investing a little more on your hair extensions, you will probably be able to buy hair extensions made of fibers such as Thermofiber or Monofiber that are actually resistant to heat to a certain degree. If you find it highly necessary to style your hair and hair extensions, consider this factor before purchasing your synthetic extensions to prevent any last-minute hair disasters.

Daily care

Brush your hair gently working from the ends to the scalp. This should be done before and after washing the hair. For curly or wavy hair types, use with your fingers to remove tangles. Avoid alcohol-based products to achieve curly hair.

Use a mild shampoo with conditioner for extensions that are dry and color-treated. Avoid using shampoos designed for volumizing hair (check the cover) as they tend to raise the hair cuticles and encourage hair tangling and knots.

Avoid using conditioner on the bonds or scalp. Using too much conditioner can increase the oiliness of the hair and thus, weaken the keratin bonds.

Wash your hair gently using cool or warm water – avoid hot showers for hair extensions. Avoid scrubbing your hair vigorously while washing as it may cause tangling. While washing, comb through the hair in a downward motion using your fingers.

Avoid washing your hair more than thrice a week unless your scalp generates a lot of oil. Washing your hair too many times may cause dryness of the hair.

Towel dry your hair – do not rub the hair with a towel – pat dry only.

Never go to sleep with wet hair.

In order to brush your hair use a wide tooth comb for the ends only, a loop brush for medium to thick hair and board bristle brush for medium to fine hair.

Brush your hair at least thrice a day towards the scalp to keep tangles away

While styling and blow drying, brush in a downward motion. Make sure you have towel dried your hair before blow drying. Dry the hair with your fingers and style with a curling iron or straightening iron, if required. Avoid brushing too much while blow drying as it may lead to loss of hair extensions.

For swimming, before you wear your swimming cap, wet hair under a tap, apply conditioner and tie your hair into a braid. This will prevent tangling and hair damage. Keep your hair away from salt water and chlorine as much as possible.

For long extensions, braid your hair before going to bed to prevent pulling, tangling and knots. If you have any more questions about hair extensions or wigs, or have some tips on how to keep hair extensions at their best, please send us your comments. Thank you.
