How to Wash Synthetic Wigs

synthetic wigsA synthetic wig does not require frequent washing. The general recommendation is to wash the wig after 12-15 wears. It is better to avoid the excessive use of styling products because they increase the wig’s exposure to dust and dirt.

Here are the steps:

Purchase a shampoo especially designed for washing synthetic wigs because regular shampoos are too strong and might fray the wig’s fibers and cause discoloration. Before washing, brush gently the wig with a wire brush or just use your fingers to untangle the fibers if you have a curly wig.

Fill in a large bowl with cold water (never, never use hot water), add shampoo and a teaspoon of baking soda, if the wig caught strong odors (smoke, cigarette) and stir in. Place the wig into the bowl and keep it immersed for one minute. Rub very gently the wig cap to clean it and let the wig to soak for 5-10 minutes.

Rinse with fresh and cool water until all the wig shampoo is gone and squeeze lightly to remove the excess water. Do not twist to prevent fibers breakage. Spread the strands of the wig on a towel for air drying. It never hurts to use a wig stand for this purpose. From time to time you can apply a wig conditioner after washing to revitalize the fibers.

Wait until the wig dries completely to start brushing and styling it. If you brush the wig while is still wet you can deal with serious damages, which will certainly shorten the wig’s life. How to Put on a Wig

how to apply a wigOne of the most common questions we get from customers is how to apply a wig. We would be happy to answer that for you. Wigs are very easy to put in. In fact they are so easy to put on they require very little instruction only common sense.

A standard synthetic or human hair wig cap is shaped like a mold of your head. It usually has extended tabs at the sides of the wig called “ear tabs” that are used to position the wig on your head. Most brand name wigs will also adjustable straps located at the back of the wigs where the wig will sit on your nape so that you can tighten the wig to fit more securely if desired.

The first thing you need to do is put a wig cap liner over your own hair. If you do not have hair, you do not need to have the wig liner but it can form a nice barrier between your scalp and the wig cap and prevent rubbing or irritation.

Once your cap is on, you simply pick up the wig with the back of the wig towards your chest and the front of the wig away from you. You hold the wig on the tabs and slide it on over your head. Just pretend you are putting on a hat or a baseball cap. It’s that easy.

While holding the tabs, try to locate the most comfortable place for the tabs to sit around your ears. The tabs should come forward about a 1/2 inch a the temples and fit snugly around the ears.

Now that the wig is on your head, position as needed and adjust the nape and straps until it fills secure. Shake your head, take out your favorite wig brush and style to suit!
