The Difference Between Lace Front and Full Lace Wigs

lace front wigs, full lace wigs, wigs canadaLace wigs have been the fashion industry’s best kept secret for over 15 years used on movie set and fashion runways models, well known celebrities, and rock stars. If you want better, longer hair you can have it to when you shop online with us. There are several types of lace wigs available; glueless lace wigs, silk top lace wigs, full lace wigs and front lace wigs. The first step is figuring out which type of lace wig is best for you.

So, what’s the difference between a lace front wig and a full lace wig?

A front lace wig is a wig that has lace only at the front from ear to ear and is only applied around the front hairline. A full lace wig however has lace around the entire perimeter of the head and what is best about full lace wigs is that you can wear your hair in a high pony-tail and it is completely undetectable when applied correctly.

Lace wigs are available in both synthetic and human hair however the human hair are the most popular and most natural. We recommend first time users, try an inexpensive synthetic lace front wig first and then if they like it, go to a more expensive high quality full lace wig.How is a lace front wig different from my other wigs?”Lace front wigs are the most popular non-surgical method of hair replacement in the world. Your lace front wig is made from real human hair and hand tied into a very sheer lace base one single hair at a time. It looks so natural that it is undetectable to anyone, even at a distance of only a few inches away.

You can wear your lace front wig for weeks at a time without removing it. You can comb your hair all the way back, part in anyway and even wear it swimming!

Lace front systems are applied with glue or tape to the natural hairline and if applied properly can be worn up to 4 weeks without removal. The length of time the lace wig will last depends on your skin type (oily vs. dry) and how your skin reacts to the type of adhesive used. For the first while, you may have to go through several types of adhesives until you find the one that is right for you.If you want to buy real hair, and have the most natural look possible… the lace front wig is the way to go. All of our lace front wigs are designed by name brand manufacturers and also made in house by our own factory and constructed with the highest quality materials.

When you purchase a front lace wig from our store, you will receive instructions on how to apply your new wig. We also will provide links to internet videos showing various persons applying lace wigs. We do recommend that if you want your wig to look as natural as can be, that you take your lace wig to a professional for at least the first application until you can attach it confidently on your own.Lace wigs are the most popular wigs in the hair industry because they are “virtually” undetectable, even at close range. Full lace wigs are made with a special undetectable transparent lace material that blends into your hairline! Easy to apply, lace wigs give the appearance of a natural looking hair-line that looks like its your own hair growing right out of your own scalp! It’s amazing and incredible. Once a secret only for the Hollywood Stars now can be yours. Also most important to know full lace wigs are the only wigs in the world that can be worn in a high ponytail.

How to Put on a Wig

how to apply a wigOne of the most common questions we get from customers is how to apply a wig. We would be happy to answer that for you. Wigs are very easy to put in. In fact they are so easy to put on they require very little instruction only common sense.

A standard synthetic or human hair wig cap is shaped like a mold of your head. It usually has extended tabs at the sides of the wig called “ear tabs” that are used to position the wig on your head. Most brand name wigs will also adjustable straps located at the back of the wigs where the wig will sit on your nape so that you can tighten the wig to fit more securely if desired.

The first thing you need to do is put a wig cap liner over your own hair. If you do not have hair, you do not need to have the wig liner but it can form a nice barrier between your scalp and the wig cap and prevent rubbing or irritation.

Once your cap is on, you simply pick up the wig with the back of the wig towards your chest and the front of the wig away from you. You hold the wig on the tabs and slide it on over your head. Just pretend you are putting on a hat or a baseball cap. It’s that easy.

While holding the tabs, try to locate the most comfortable place for the tabs to sit around your ears. The tabs should come forward about a 1/2 inch a the temples and fit snugly around the ears.

Now that the wig is on your head, position as needed and adjust the nape and straps until it fills secure. Shake your head, take out your favorite wig brush and style to suit!

How to Get Rid of the Shine on Synthetic Wigs

synthetic wig shopping, wigs torontoDid you buy a new synthetic wig and you absolutely love it except for the shine? Want to get rid of that fake shiny unnatural look? Of course you do, and especially if its a wig that you love everything else about.

The right color, the right fit, the perfect style…but too shiny.

Do not worry.

This look of “to shiny” does not have to last forever and can easily be resolved. This can happen to some synthetic wigs and it has nothing to do with the quality of the wig, just the type of fibre that was used and it can be easily remedied.

Simply take your new wig out of the box and affix it with pins to a styro foam head.

Take a small amount of cornstarch, talc or baby powder and sprinkle it on a blush brush or a wig brush and distribute the powder evenly over the wig. Let the powder stay on for at least two hours and then lightly dust it off and shake off excess powder.

The shine will be gone and the wig will look more natural.

If your wig still has some persistent shine, you can also try washing it. To do this, fill up your sink or basin with 6 cups of cold water and add 1tbsp of vinegar to the water.

Swish the synthetic wig around in the water, then take it out, sop up excess water with a towel and hang your wig to dry naturally on styro foam wig head

No more shine, and a wig that you can fully love all over again.

How to Control Hair Loss

losing your hairOne of the biggest flaws in the genetics of both men and women is hair shedding however, for many people; this condition can be easily controlled by routinely following a few treatment measures. The following are some ways you can control and prevent mild hair loss without the need to see your doctor or buy expensive hair treatments and detergents.

Massage regularly with oils

This is one of the most popular techniques of controlling hair loss. Massaging the scalp with lukewarm oil such as coconut oil, amla (gooseberry) oil, mustard oil, almond oil or castor oil can greatly promote hair growth. This is an excellent treatment for those who wish for longer hair. Moreover, oil massages are also excellent treatments for dandruff, which is also a common cause of hair loss in many people. Regular massaging will encourage blood circulation in your scalp and reduce stress levels that arise due to hair fall. You can massage your hair with coconut oil for three to four times a week. Make sure the oil stays in your hair for at least six hours before washing.

Use homemade formulas to treat hair loss

Gooseberries can be dried in the sun and then boiled in coconut oil until the oil turns dark in color. Allow the oil to cool down and apply it before bedtime to control your hair fall. This home remedy also prevents premature graying as an added bonus!

Mix an equal amount of lemon juice and fresh amla juice and apply in your scalp 30 minutes before taking a bath.

Fresh lime juice can also be mixed with green coriander leaf juice to promote hair growth.

hair lossApplying coconut milk extracted from the meat of the coconut is an excellent way to nourish the hair, soften it and also prevent hair loss. Apply 30 minutes before taking a bath.

Mix egg white with sour yogurt or buttermilk. Apply the mixture with your fingers half an hour before taking a bath. This is an excellent protein treatment for the hair.

Soak fenugreek seeds overnight and grind them to make a paste. Apply the paste entirely on your hair to treat hair fall and dandruff.

Apply aloe vera gel on the scalp. The gel prevents dryness of the hair and thus reduces hair fall as well.

Maintain a healthy diet

A protein rich diet is very important for proper growth of the hair. Make sure your diet includes milk, yogurt, cheese, soybeans, eggs, poultry and fish, if you aim at improving your overall health and your scalp health as well.

Additionally, you must also increase your consumption of green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, amaranthus leaves etc. as they are rich sources of iron. You may also drink half a liter of spinach and lettuce juice every day if you want quick results.

Vitamin B1 and iodine deficiency also leads to hair loss in women therefore, it is important that you take an adequate supply of foods containing these two nutrients such as seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables.

Consider Wearing a Wig

If your hair loss is completely out of control, consider wearing a wig until your hair grows back. A w ig is a great short term solution for hair loss and will help make you look and feel great until your own healthy hair comes back. Types of Wigs

types of wigsIf you are a novice wig buyer you are probably overwhelmed by the variety of wigs that is presented to you. There are many types of wigs in the market, each type designed to suit a person and her needs. You have probably heard of wig types such as lace wigs, synthetic wigs, human hair wigs etc., but what exactly are they made of and how can each material benefit you in a different way? Continue reading to find out.

Synthetic hair Wigs

This is the most common hair wig which you will probably get in any fashion store or wig store you go to. Not only is it so widespread, it is also very cheap. Synthetic hair wigs are made of acrylic fibers of varying qualities. You can get an idea of a wig’s quality by its price, like the old saying “you get what you pay for”, an extremely cheap wig may not match the quality of a slightly more expensive one. Quality does not only depend on how the wig looks, but on its strength and durability as well. The look you get with a wig on is very important and it is imperative that you get a wig that suits you perfectly but the second important aspect of wig shopping is its quality. How long do you want your wig to last? Will you be frequently styling your wig with heat treatments such as heat curling, ironing or blow drying? Ask yourself these questions to come up with the quality you want. Ideally, you would prefer something that would last a long time; therefore, you must pick a heat resistant variety that would withstand heat to a certain extent. A cheap wig will most probably get damaged with heat treatment as the fibers begin to melt. Due to this problem, many manufacturers are choosing protein based fibers over acrylic types, to make the strands more durable and resistant to heat. Regardless of these disadvantages, a synthetic wig is the cheapest of all wigs and it is very easy to take care of one too.

Human hair wigs

A human hair wig is made up of real hair and the quality depends mostly on the origin. Asian hair such as Chinese hair will be cheaper than other hair wigs; however, they often lag behind in quality. Indian hair wigs are often the best in quality when it comes to Asian hair however, European or Eastern European hair are considered to be best in quality. Virgin human hair wigs are non-processed hair wigs that have not undergone any styling or chemical treatments and are sold in their natural state.

Full-lace Hand-tied wigs

Full lace and hand tied wigs are often made with human hair; however, there are a few synthetic versions with hand tied caps. Hand tied caps are made of a silk meshwork that may cover the wig cap entirely or cover it in different sections which are sewn together and armored with a silk or satin ribbon like material. The mesh is also applied in lace front or full lace wigs. The hair is often knotted in a mesh like or waffle pattern in the hair cap.

Hair, Hair Extensions, Wigs Canada

How to Take Care of Hair Extensions

hair extensionsI love hair extensions but they are not always the easiest things to take care of. Especially when you get really long ones installed. But since you’ve got them in and want to keep them for as long as possible, it’s useful to know how to take care of them on your own without always having to go to a hair dresser and most importantly so that you don’t damage your own hair underneath. Unlike your real hair, synthetic hair require a bit more tender, loving, care to make them look perfect beyond their ‘expiration date’.

Before you buy…

Make sure the quality of the hair extensions you buy it top notch according to your requirements. Note that cheap synthetic hair extensions will not last long and will probably melt and shrivel to heat. If you are into styling your hair frequently through ironing, blow drying and heat curling, make sure your hair extensions can take the heat. It is most likely that cheap hair extensions will be made of fibers that will not withstand the heat and get damaged or melt instantly. Good news is, that if you agree on investing a little more on your hair extensions, you will probably be able to buy hair extensions made of fibers such as Thermofiber or Monofiber that are actually resistant to heat to a certain degree. If you find it highly necessary to style your hair and hair extensions, consider this factor before purchasing your synthetic extensions to prevent any last-minute hair disasters.

Daily care

Brush your hair gently working from the ends to the scalp. This should be done before and after washing the hair. For curly or wavy hair types, use with your fingers to remove tangles. Avoid alcohol-based products to achieve curly hair.

Use a mild shampoo with conditioner for extensions that are dry and color-treated. Avoid using shampoos designed for volumizing hair (check the cover) as they tend to raise the hair cuticles and encourage hair tangling and knots.

Avoid using conditioner on the bonds or scalp. Using too much conditioner can increase the oiliness of the hair and thus, weaken the keratin bonds.

Wash your hair gently using cool or warm water – avoid hot showers for hair extensions. Avoid scrubbing your hair vigorously while washing as it may cause tangling. While washing, comb through the hair in a downward motion using your fingers.

Avoid washing your hair more than thrice a week unless your scalp generates a lot of oil. Washing your hair too many times may cause dryness of the hair.

Towel dry your hair – do not rub the hair with a towel – pat dry only.

Never go to sleep with wet hair.

In order to brush your hair use a wide tooth comb for the ends only, a loop brush for medium to thick hair and board bristle brush for medium to fine hair.

Brush your hair at least thrice a day towards the scalp to keep tangles away

While styling and blow drying, brush in a downward motion. Make sure you have towel dried your hair before blow drying. Dry the hair with your fingers and style with a curling iron or straightening iron, if required. Avoid brushing too much while blow drying as it may lead to loss of hair extensions.

For swimming, before you wear your swimming cap, wet hair under a tap, apply conditioner and tie your hair into a braid. This will prevent tangling and hair damage. Keep your hair away from salt water and chlorine as much as possible.

For long extensions, braid your hair before going to bed to prevent pulling, tangling and knots. If you have any more questions about hair extensions or wigs, or have some tips on how to keep hair extensions at their best, please send us your comments. Thank you.

Celebrities Who Wear Wigs

gwen stefani hair wigsIf you are thinking of bleaching your hair despite the red flags presented by many experts, just because Gwen Stefani’s hair looks silky smooth, healthy and natural, stop! Before making an impulsive decision about one of the most important parts of your body that defines your look, style and flair, it is good to familiarize yourself with the outcome of bleaching your hair. Hair bleaching results: dull hair, split ends, unhealthy and unnatural looking hair… and lots and lots of hair damage.

Celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Gwen Stefani popularized the platinum blond look, however, it is imperative to note that platinum or bleach blond hair is one of the most damaging hair styles. The science behind the negative effects of bleaching is obvious; the powerful chemicals penetrate the cuticles of your hair and thus, damage it, inside-out. So why are celebrities willing to take the risk? The answer is they just don’t. The beautiful women of Hollywood know better than to damage one of their main attractions and thus, resort to wearing wigs.

There are many famous women, such as Christina Aguilera who have suffered from serious hair loss disorders and have resorted to wearing the wigs to maintain their glamorous image and popularity. Christina Aguilera actually had bald patches on her scalp, a condition called traction alopecia due to the usage of dyes and extensions. The condition was covered up with a gorgeous black mane—which was of course, a wig.

Image

Women, even the famous ones, suffer from all kinds of hair loss, despite the expensive products they use. Statistics show that about half of the female population will experience severe hair thinning. Even though bald patches and baldness is a less common condition, it can happen to anyone. Women of Hollywood however, have their own tricks up their sleeves, what seems to be a change of hairstyle, might be a change of hair, you never know. For example, American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez likes to wear a variety of wigs instead of her real hair in the show. Hair wigs have become vital pieces of hair accessories for female celebrities as they make them look glamorous, beautiful and young.

Here is a list of female celebrities who love to hold on to their wigs instead of subjecting their hair to various forms of damages through styling, coloring, bleaching, ironing etc.:

Benefits of Human Hair Wigs

human hair wigsMany people have trouble deciding whether a synthetic wig will match the quality of a human hair wig. While synthetic wigs are relatively inexpensive, they do not measure up to the natural look and feel a human hair wig may provide you with. There are not many disadvantages regarding human hair wigs due to their high quality, you just have to expend more on one and take care of it like it’s your own hair i.e. wash it after every use.

The following are the advantages of using a human hair wig in contrast to synthetic wigs:

Human hair wigs are stronger and more durable

Synthetic wigs do not possess the same durability and strength as human hair wigs, making them last for a shorter period of time compared to human hair. Additionally, human hair is heavier and more voluminous, thus giving a more natural look and feel.

A human hair wig can look like real hair and you have more styling options with human hair than synthetic wigs

Apart from the fact that human hair feels heavier than synthetic hair, it looks more real and natural because it is made of real human hair. Additionally, human hair is more durable therefore you can make it go through the same styling options as you would with your real hair such as ironing, heating, blow during, curling etc., without making it look unnatural or fake.

Human hair wigs last longer than synthetic wigs

It is better to invest on a human hair wig than replacing your synthetic wig every time it wears off. Aside from being more real and natural, it will save you from burning holes through your wallet repeatedly. Human hair wigs last just as long as real hair, this can be about a few years on an average, in contrast to synthetic wigs that last for only 4 months maximum, depending on the daily styling, treatment, usage and length of hair.

Human hair wigs are heat resistant

One aspect of synthetic hair which most people worry about is the melting of the fibers of the hair due to heat treatment and styling. Human hair wigs are made of real hair and can withstand heat and friction the same as real hair does, therefore, you will have more styling options such as heat curling, ironing and blow drying without causing serious damage to the hair.

Wig origins

Most of the human hair wigs that are in the market these days are from Asian countries, usually from China. Asian countries like India and Pakistan provide better quality hair compared to other countries of Asia and like most Asian women’s hair, human hair wigs from Asian countries are often dark in color and are made to produce dark, straight wigs. In order to change the color of the hair, the hair has to go through several heating processes and dying, curling and bleaching, to match the style of what a buyer may require. However, such hairs often go through a lot of damage and often do not last longer than a few months. Therefore, for Asian hair, always choose darker colors or the original hair colors.

The best quality human air wigs are originated from European countries, particularly the Eastern European ones such as Russia and Poland. These wigs are more expensive compared to Asian hair due to the quality and longevity. If you would like to order a human hair wig or have a wig custom made in human hair, please contact us for a free quote. We would love to hear from you.

What is Alopecia?

alopecia wigs canadaAlopecia refers to the loss of hair from your scalp or any hairy regions of the body. Men, women and also children may experience alopecia as it can be a result of certain medications, hereditary factors or underlying medical conditions.

Baldness means the excessive loss of hair or the absence of hair from the scalp. Baldness is often noticeable when it affects the scalp; however, other regions of the body are also susceptible to the condition. Many people leave this condition untreated, without hiding their baldness, while others choose to cover the affected regions with scarves, hats, makeup and different hairstyles—if medical treatment is not sought.

There are two major types of alopecia namely: Alopecia areta and androgenetic alopecia. Alopecia areata take place when the immune system of the body attacks the hair follicles by mistake, causing their hair to fall out. Androgenetic alopecia is a condition that is inherited, which results in the thinning of the hair, causing hair fall. 60% of the men are affected by androgenetic alopecia, which is permanent.

Causes

Normally people lose 50-100 hairs per day, which should not make a noticeable difference as the human scalp can contain up to 100,000 hairs. With age, the hair gets thinner and hair starts to fall more. Other common causes of hair loss include medication, medical conditions and hormonal factors.

Medication

Hair loss is commonly caused by medication used to treat the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Depression
  • Arthritis
  • Medical conditions

The following medical conditions may also cause hair loss in many people:

Scalp infections. These may include ringworm, which tampers with the skin and the hair on your scalp causing a drastic hair fall. However, once the condition is treated, the hair will grow back.

Thyroid disorders. The thyroid gland plays a role in regulating the hormone levels of the body. A problem with the normal functioning of the gland may also result in hair fall.

Alopecia areata. This is a disease which occurs as a result of the body’s immune system attacking the hair follicles on the scalp, thus causing hair fall patches.

Other skin conditions. Scarring diseases such as lichen planus and lupus may lead to permanent hair loss in the scarred regions.

Hormonal factors

This is the most frequent cause of hair loss as a result of a hereditary condition termed as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness. People, who are more likely to experience hair loss due to hormonal changes, suffer from permanent hair loss in different patterns. This type of hair fall is common in men and can even commence during puberty.

Sometimes hair loss due to hormonal imbalances can be temporary especially due to stopping the use of birth control pills, childbirth/pregnancy and menopause.

Other causes of hair loss include:

Hair pulling disorder. This is actually a mental disorder which gives rise to an urge to pull one’s hair from any part of the body leading to bald spots.

Physical or emotional shock. This can be a high fever, grief due to death or even drastic weight loss or malnutrition.

Hairstyles. Pulling the hair too tightly to style it can also cause hair loss.

Symptoms

The way hair loss occurs depends on the underlying cause that leads to it. Sometimes hair loss can be gradual or sudden and sometimes it can be ‘patchy’ only affecting small parts of your body or it can also cause a complete hair loss affecting the whole body and the scalp. Hair loss can be temporary in many people, however, it can be permanent as well—it all depends on the causative factor.

Some common signs and symptoms of hair loss include:

Gradual thinning of hair from the top of your head. This can affect both men and women and is often characterized as an M shaped line on the forehead.

Round and/or patchy bald regions or spots. Commonly known as bald spots, this kind of hair loss usually affects the scalp but can also occur on the eyebrows and beards. You may even feel some irritation or itchiness while the hair falls off.

Sudden hair loosening. This can be a result of a physical or emotional shock, allowing your hair to ‘loosen’ from the scalp. You may get handfuls of hair falling off while you wash or comb your hair. Usually all of the hair is not affected and the condition does not result in patching.

Hair loss from the whole body. Chemotherapy or other medical treatments may cause the complete loss of hair from your body. The hair will re-grow after treatment is complete.

When to seek medical help

Sudden hair loss may indicate a red flag for an underlying medical condition that may be hazardous to your health. If you suspect that the hair loss is not caused due to an obvious cause or is your hair falls much more than usual while combing or washing, consult your doctor as medical treatment may be required.

How to create natural looking blonde highlights

blonde hairIt is a huge hassle coloring your hair and when it comes to getting blonde highlights, you might need a lot of patience and maybe some anger management. Many of us who like to color our hair at home (since the salon prices are sky high), experience annoying results such as blonde streaks that do not appear, appear orange or just do not appear natural.

It is important to know that sprays that allow the hair to ‘turn’ blonde, do not have any natural-miracle-cheap trick going on. They simply contain bleach, which by the way, is bad for your hair. If you want, you can go for it, but I wouldn’t recommend it because it will just leave your hair too light and damaged—you will just end up cutting them and spending more cha-ching.

If you want to professionally dye your hair at home, on a low budget, here is a quick way to do it. This method works for darker shades of brown as well:

Equipment and preparation

The most important tool you will need is a good hair dye. Try the L’OREAL Frost and Design as it is one of the best hair color products that works on dark hair as well, giving a natural blonde color–not orange, brown or red.

The next important tool you will need is a hair cap for streaks. If your hair dye kit did not come with one, go to a local store to get it as it is an excellent way to precisely color your hair, evenly, so that the vexing and overly-prominent thick strands of blonde do not happen. Moreover, it also makes streaking much easier, even for long hair.

Make sure your hair is fully straightened before you wear your hair cap so that your hair can be easily pulled through the holes in the cap. Also make sure you properly comb your hair to prevent irritating knots. For long and/or curly hair types, putting some baby powder before placing the cap can let the hair slide through the holes much easily.

One last thing, wear an old shirt and go through the instructions on the hair dye kit beforehand.

Application Tips

Depending on how thick you want your natural blonde strands to be, pull as much hair as you want through the holes of the cap. Make sure you pull out enough hair through the holes so that the color actually ‘appears’. If you want visible streaks all over your hair, pull your hair through alternate holes or all the holes. Just make sure you do it evenly—but do not worry about it too much, a little mistakes here and there won’t hurt.

If you normally part your hair while styling, part your hair before placing the cap.

Make sure you put on the cap properly and tightly so that your hair is completely tucked in it.

You do not have to use your finger to pull the hair. The set comes with a hook which allows you to pull out stands easily but don’t worry too much about the evenness as it will make it look more natural.

Start pulling the hair from the top of your hair and evenly work towards the bottom—you might need some help from a friend or anyone in your family.

Prepare the hair color mixture and make sure you follow the instructions given on the box properly.

Make sure you saturate the strands completely and adequately to ensure that they are properly colored from root to tip.

Sit back, relax and wait for the suggested time mentioned on the box. Check one strand once in 10 minutes to check if it is the right color or if it needs more time.

Once the required color is apparent, remove the cap and wash your hair properly with the shampoo and conditioner from the hair dye set.

The strands may look too bright or too prominent after washing. This is only because you are new to them and not used to seeing bright/light colors on your hair. Wait for a while and you will notice that the highlights blend as your hair dries. Be patient!

Causes of hair loss in young children

child alopeciaAlopecia is the form of thinning of hair or entire or patchy hair loss can greatly raise the anxiety in many parents. However, young children can be treated for their hair loss problems in order to regrow their hair normally.

The following are the causes of hair loss in children. Your child’s doctor will diagnose the condition and carry out the necessary treatments required for hair growth:

  • Alopecia areata

In this condition, the body’s own immune system targets the hair follicles resulting in patches of hair loss or bald spots on the head. The patches will be oval and smooth without any tiny hairs. Statistics show that 1 in 1000 children suffer from this condition.

There is no known cure for the condition; however, treatment procedures can be performed in order to control it. Most of the children will regrow their hair in one year, however, 5% of the children may not respond to treatment resulting in the loss of hair from the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or even the whole body (alopecia universalis)

Treatment may involve the application of topical creams or aggressive corticosteroid ointments on the bald regions. Teenagers may be given steroid injections with the minoxidil.

  • Tinea capitis

Tinea capitis or ringworm refers to a fungal infection usually present in children. The condition may take place in different ways, but is commonly recognized as round/oval scaly bald patches on the head. The hairs on the affected region can be broken off and make the skin appear as if it has black dots on it.

Your child’s doctor may use a culture test to diagnose the condition. Your child may have to take oral fungal treatments with the use of antifungal shampoo in order to control the growth of the fungus and eliminate it from the scalp.

Ringworm is a contagious infection, therefore, it is important that your child does not share his personal belongings and make sure that nobody touches the items that were in contact with his head such as hats, scarves, hair brushes, combs and even pillow cases.

  • Trichotillomania

Also known as hair pulling disorder, trichotillomania refers to hair loss caused by constant pulling, rubbing, plucking or twisting of the hair. The affected regions are patchy and the hair will be broken in varying lengths. Usually the child’s dominant hand side of the head is affected the most.

The condition is often caused due to emotional factors that may cause stress or grief, for example, through the loss of a close family member such as a grandparent, divorce between parents and a new sibling. If you suspect your child has hair pulling disorder, it is important to note that this is a cause of stress and should not be treated by scolding or reprimanding the child. Instead seek counseling to relieve your child’s stress.

  • Telogen effluvium

A severe or sudden stress for example, a surgery, a high fever, a severe injury, certain medication or even the death of a close family member or friend can interrupt the normal growth of hair. This happens because the hair growth cycle takes a resting phase known as the Telogen phase. In about 6-16 weeks, hair begins to fall off dramatically resulting in patchy or complete baldness.

There is no treatment or medication to treat Telogen effluvium, however, in most people, hair grows back normally once the period of stress is over.

  • Nutritional deficiency

This is a less common situation, but hair loss can happen as a result of nutrient deficiency as well, for example:

  1. Vitamin H, a B complex vitamin also known as biotin helps in converting carbohydrates to glucose for energy. Biotin deficiency may also lead to hair loss
  2. Iron deficiency or anemia also causes hair loss in many children and adults as well
  3. Zinc is a mineral required for cell metabolism and normal growth of cells—deficiency may interrupt normal hair growth

Sometimes, too much vitamin A in the body may also lead to hair loss. However, in most cases, children having a nutritional diet will not suffer from any form of nutritional deficiencies or malnutrition that may result in hair loss. Consult your child’s pediatrician before you give your child any nutrient supplements.

  • Hormonal disorders

Sometimes endocrine problems or hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism can cause hair loss in children. Hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs as a result of an underactive thyroid gland which produces insufficient thyroid hormones for metabolism.

Your child’s doctor will perform a blood test to check or thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and T4 levels to determine the productivity of the thyroid gland.

Treatment involves certain medication that replace the hormones that are in inadequate supply, depending on your child’s health in general and medical history, his/her tolerance to certain medication and therapies, the severity of the condition etc.

Losing hair can be especially troubling for grown ups, let alone a child.  There are many wigs now available for children in human and synthetic hair that  can help rebuild a child’s self esteem who is dealing with alopecia. A new wig or custom designed hairpiece can really make your kid feel like a kid again and start enjoying life despite their medical circumstance. It’s wonderful to see the transformation in a child with new hair made to look just like their very own!

Information for Women Who are Losing their Hair

hair loss in womenFemale pattern hair loss is not easily recognized as it is in men. Female hair loss usually starts after the age of 50, due to which there is rarely an obvious hereditary reason or recognizable factors such as thinning over the scalp in female pattern alopecia. When a woman experiences hair loss, sometimes she is not even sure if the hair loss is going to temporary or permanent. For example, certain illnesses and pregnancy bring about hair thinning which is often restored once the period of illness or pregnancy is over.

It is important that you consult a doctor or a hair restoration specialist as self-evaluation is often ineffective. Female pattern hair loss is less obvious in women and they are more likely to suffer from non-pattern hair loss.

Like men, women are more likely to suffer from hair loss due to the genetic sensitivity to androgens in the follicles of the scalp. This is called androgenic alopecia. However, women do not exhibit the same pattern of hair loss such as the ‘cue ball’ pattern like men do.

A few common patterns of female hair loss include:

  • Diffuse thinning of the hair affecting the entire scalp—the thinning is more apparent at the back of the scalp
  • Diffuse thinning of the hair affecting the entire scalp—more apparent thinning of the hair in the front (not the frontal hairline)
  • Diffuse thinning affecting the entire scalp—thinning is more apparent at the front including the frontal hairline

Unlike in men, the visibility of the hair decreases or the hair becomes thinner, not as a result of the uniform miniaturizing of the hair diameter, in fact, in women, the hair diameter varies greatly. It is important to note that miniaturization does not always involve androgenic alopecia and may occur as a result of other causes such as menopause in women.

It is critical to understand that female hair loss may begin in the early 20s and can progress and exacerbate if left untreated.

Causes

Each hair grows at an average rate of around ½ inch per month from your hair follicles. It then keeps growing for 2-6 years, after which, it rests for a small period of time. The hair then falls off and is replaced with a new hair growing in the same spot.

Baldness or female pattern hair loss takes place when new hair does not grow in place of the ones that have been falling off. The exact reason why this happens is not yet understood properly, but some of the following conditions may be associated with certain female hair loss cases:

  • Aging
  • Family history consisting of several cases of male/female pattern baldness—condition is genetic so it might take place in you as well
  • Decreased level of androgens—after the menopause stage, for example

Other causes of female hair loss include:

  • Skin diseases that scar the scalp follicles
  • Hair breakage due to constant twisting, pulling or hair shaft abnormalities that may be present at birth
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Iron deficiency—anemia
  • Hormone disorders—high testosterone levels or low thyroid hormone levels
  • Medications such as beta blockers and those used for chemotherapy
  • A vitamin B deficiency
  • Alopecia areata—patchy hair loss
  • Temporary hair fall due to pregnancy, surgery or major  medical conditions or illnesses
  • Sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis

Symptoms

The following are some of the common symptoms of female pattern baldness

  • Thinning of the hair from the top of the scalp. Hair thinning progresses as it widens through the central region of the scalp
  • The frontal hairline will stay intact
  • The hair loss only sometimes develops into an entire baldness of the scalp—which is usually the case in men.

Itching, infections and skin sores are usually not present in such cases so if any of these symptoms are occurring associated with your hair loss, please make sure to consult with your family Doctor.

Short Term Solutions

If your thinning hair is getting to the point that you are embarrassed to leave the house, you may want to consider wearing a hair top piece to cover up the thinning areas until you go for treatment. If you need more information about hair top pieces, where you can purchase them and how they are applied, please contact us or follow our blog for more information and tips on hair care and hair additions.

Having a Bad Hair Day?

frizzy hair, tangled hair, out of control hairAre you tired of having bad hair days? You know. Those days when you wake up and your hair is going in one million directions and standing on end. It looks frizzy and out of control and everything that you try to do to fix it only seems to make it worse.  You just want to throw a baseball cap on your head and hide away from the world or cover it up with a wig.

Fortunately, there are many ways that you can rise from that disgrace and bring back the lost glory of your hair. But what caused the frizz in the first place? Experts agree that there are many factors that lead to your hair’s condition i.e., over processing, environmental factors, damage, genes, nutrition, texture, etc. Regardless of the cause, you can manage your locks the best way possible. What do you need to do?

Four Times’ the Charm:

It is highly recommended that you shampoo only up to four times a week. That is because going beyond that can lead to dryness, which will worsen the problem. You would not want to further aggravate the damage, right? It is also very important that you know the correct shampoo for your hair type. As you may know, some products are intended for fine hair, while others are for a wavy or thick kind.

It is also recommended that you apply deep conditioner once per week, especially if the damage is caused by paring and coloring. Just make sure to rinse it off with cool water as it tightens the hair cuticles, making it shiny and sleek. This also gives the appearance that you hair is less frizzy than it really is. Do not use oil and cream treatments though as this keeps hair from absorbing more moisture that will help in keeping hair hydrated.

Do the Serum Habit:

While your hair is still damp, make it a point to apply anti-frizz serum. Doing so will seal the cuticles of your hair, reducing its roughness and dryness effectively. Is conditioner not enough then, you ask? With frizzy hair, you need all the help that you can get from any product that you can use. So, in addition to the serum, you should also spray on a leave-in conditioner. Not only will this help cut down the frizz throughout the day, it will add enough weight as well.

Trim On Demand:

This means that you have to cut off the split ends every six weeks, as these can cause unhealthy hair. When all that is left are healthy and vibrant strands, you significantly reduce the frizz.

Heat Go Away:

Although the heat from the sun can also cause damage, nothing is more detrimental to your straight tresses or curly locks than blow dryers and flat irons. It is best that you opt to air dry instead. However, if you really need to use either tool, make sure to apply first a hair product that will provide protection from heat damage. When styling, you should also use protective serums for added smoothness.

Following these tips will definitely help you deal with frizzy hair. Once it is back to its vibrant and shiny condition, you will be able to finally say that you have regained your crowning glory.

Get that Full Head of Hair You’ve Always Wanted

A great voluminous mane is what every woman yearns for. If you have plain straight hair, you must be wishing to make your hair look thicker, and if you have curly hair, you must be praying to have straight hair. Well, that’s how it goes; the grass always appears to be greener on the other side.

If you are among those who have thin and straight hair, but want to make your hair look thicker and voluminous, here are some tips which could be of help.

  • Use Voluminous beauty products

You can find umpteen shampoos, conditioners and serums in the market which help in increasing the volume of the hair naturally. L’oreal, Garnier and many other brands have come up with some really great shampoos and conditioners that actually help in increasing the volume of the hair. However, a good practice is to apply serum in wet hair before going to sleep. It helps in making the hair grow from the inside because the growth of every body part, hair etc happens only while you rest. Thus, applying a good serum at night can really help.

  • Blow dry your hair upside down

This technique can make your hair look thicker and voluminous. Just roll your hair in a round brush, hold them upwards and blow dry with your dryer. You’ll end up having a great fluffy looking hairstyle. But, it’s going to last only for few hours. So, this acts as a quick fix to get voluminous hair. Don’t over-do this, because using blow dryer too often can damage your hair. Also, don’t forget to apply mousse on your hair before blow drying.

  • Layered hair cuts

Don’t just sit on the salon chair and let them do whatever they want to do with your hair! Ask them about the haircut that can make your hair look fluffier and voluminous. Usually, if the inner layer is cut half an inch shorter than the outer one, the hairstyle tends to look voluminous.

  • Hair extension accessories

If you are reluctant about blow drying or curling your hair too often, try hair extensions to have a superb hairstyle! These hair extensions can be attached inside the layers of your hair, or outside as per your wish. You can attach them to get a great look for a party without the risk of damaging due to blow dry or curling rods. These hair extensions are available in numerous types, lengths, colors and styles. You can select the color that matches the best with your hair and get a superb hairstyle for the party!

If you have thin and short hair, and wish to have a voluminous mane, you can use shampoos, conditioners and serums available in the market for the same purpose. However, if you simply wish to give a thicker look to your hair for a short while, you can blow dry, curl or use hair extensions for the same. These can give a ravishing look and will definitely make heads turn.

How to Secure a Lace Wig for a Full 30 Day Hold

lace wig applicationHave you recently purchased a new  full lace wig but it won’t stay on for more than a week at a time? This could be caused by many factors. Whether or not your lace wig will stay on usually depends a lot on your skin type.

If you are anything like me with oily skin, then your lace wig probably hasn’t stayed on as long as you would have liked it to. I tried several glues and adhesives and they worked but just not as long as I had liked them to.

Then a friend told me to try using two types of adhesives at once. I did it and I was surprised after a few attempts that I had no more lifting and my lace wigs became one with me. It was like my own hair.

Since then I wear my lace wig all the time and never had to worry again about it coming off or lifting. I go out on wind days, I cycle and I swim just like it is my natural hair. I absolutely love the confidence I have now since I applied it correctly.

The most important factor in securing any lace wig appliance is how you prepare the area before you apply the tape and glue and then you set it. Doing these two things correctly can make all the difference in the world.

The first thing you should do is wash your own hair with a shampoo that is formulated for greasy hair or preferably with a dry shampoo product. Dry shampoo is a powder based shampoo that is used to freshen the hair follicles and remove excess grease and is ideal for lace wig wearers that plan to wear their lace wigs for extended periods of time. Dry shampoos can be purchased from most health food stores.

Once your hair has been washed and dried, you need to prepare the hairline by taking a cotton ball that has been dipped into rubbing alcohol and cleaning the area around the forehead, behind the ears and the nape. Rubbing alcohol is best because it cleanses, sanitizes and dries well in contact with the air.

The next thing to do is to cover your own hair and scalp with a wig liner and then to apply a thin layer of lace wig glue to the hairline. It’s always best to apply the glue with a bottle dropper for a cleaner application. Once the glue has been applied let it stand for 5 minutes or until the area becomes tacky.

Once the glue is sticky it is time to apply your transparent lace wig strips. Apply them around the entire hairline pressing firmly in place. Once more apply another thin layer of glue on top of the tape strips and then apply your lace wig.

Having the two layers of tape and glue will give you a double bond and a very secure hold. Take a hair band or bandana and tie it around your hairline to set the wig in place. Using a blow dryer on low heat,  blow around the hairline with the head band on secure.

Leave the head band in place for 30 minutes and voila! You have an extra strong hold and a flawless hair line. If you want to wear your lace wig for a long time, you may also want to try this double bonding technique using both adhesive and tape. Done correctly your lace wig should stay intact and secure for a full 30 days without lifting. It is so nice to know that I have this beautiful head of hair, that is secure, will never come off and is just like my own. I just love it!

Why I Buy Wigs

beautiful hair wigI buy wigs and hair because I like to feel beautiful.  Who doesn’t want flowing locks of long full hair cascading down their back? Wigs mean the world to me because they are fun and I like to play dress up. I don’t know what I would do if wigs and hair extensions did not exist. I was not blessed with long hair so I buy it.

Wigs transform me instantly into someone new. I am a confident person yes, but more confident when I am wearing a wig.  I just need it to feel beautiful and wigs do it for me. Sorry if that sounds insecure to some but I just love to buy wigs online. They make me look good and feel good at the same time. So whats wrong with that? Absolutely nothing ladies and gents!

As much as I love wigs, I do not broadcast it to everyone on the street that I am wearing a wig or have had hair extensions put in.I just let them keep guessing. I am sure they know since my hair is long one month and short the next but who cares, I look great and feel great. That’ s all that matters.

Wigs on some level are a personal addiction of mine and that is why I personally prefer to buy wigs online. I get a rush every time the delivery driver shows up with my new wig package. I open the box, run upstairs to my bathroom and put it on. Then I do my makeup and put on an outfit and away I go. I swear I have been buying and wearing wigs for about ten years and I won’t stop ever. Wigs are not just for people who are losing their hair. I have my own hair, that I wear but I save my wigs for vacations, and dinners out and special occasions.

If you have never tried a wig, or a hairpiece or hair extensions, I encourage you to buy wigs online, order one that looks like it would suit you and check it out. And don’t worry. I have bought wigs that didn’t suit me at first, but the secret is to work with them. You have to cut it style it and brush it out a little until you get it just right. Some of the wigs, I have purchased have been an instant success, others have not been and those are the ones you play with and create a new style. I love wigs.

If you weren’t born with it, buy it. Whats the big deal? Wig smig. I love wigs plain and simple. I buy wigs. I wear wigs. There I said it. When I get my new wig, I get my quick dose of fabulous hair and voila, I am ready to take on the world!
